TEXAS STATE BOARD OF EDUCATION MEMBER GEORGINA C. PÉREZ
|
Georgina Cecilia Pérez, a Democrat, is the State Board of Education representative for District 1, representing students, parents, and educators in 40 counties in West Texas and over 900 miles along the Texas-Mexico border. She was re-elected to serve her second four-year term on the board on Nov. 3, 2020, and continues as secretary of the TXSBOE since 2019. Pérez also serves on the Committee of Instruction, which oversees curriculum and instruction, student testing, special education programs, and alternatives to social promotion.
Pérez is an El Paso native and proud graduate of Eastwood High School in the Ysleta Independent School District. She served as an eighth-grade English Language Arts and Reading teacher, department chair, pre-service and new-service teacher mentor, and professional development educator in the same district for more than a decade. Gina is fighting to protect public education for all Texans. Join her today in fighting for a moratorium on all charters and expansions, equitable funding for all classrooms regardless of zip code, and eliminating punitive consequences from standardized tests.

CANCEL THE TESTS
26 Oct 2020 | Your TXSBOE1 office wrote a letter to Governor Abbott and TEA Commissioner Mike Morath asking them to cancel the STAAR, TELPAS, and all EOC exams for the 2020-21 school year. There's no way the data is reliable and there's no reason to burden our students and teachers even more by administering high-stakes tests, especially during a pandemic.

23 Oct 2020 | Given Region 19's current COVID-19 hospitalization percentage, the region is currently in the "Red Zone." School systems in the region will continue to offer remote instruction for all families that choose remote instruction. For those families that choose on campus attendance, it will be provided as well; however, access to on campus instruction may be restricted by a school system as described below depending upon the level of COVID-19 hospitalizations as a percentage of total hospitalizations in the Trauma Service Area (TSA).
